History is best understood directly at its own home, so what better place to meet it than where it is sacredly kept: the museum.

We offer you a virtual trip, in a first episode, in the Natural Sciences Department of the Oltenia Museum in Craiova, which you can visit from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:00 and 17:00.

Captivating and interactive, the Department of Natural Sciences (opened under the name of "Museum of Natural History of Craiova", in 1923) makes you feel like a child in the candy store, whether you are 5 or 105 years old. There are travels among the planets, among animals and plants, and they are a proof at our fingertips, which shows us that we can learn about life from a place that is silent, but that tells us so much.

Among the most impressive exhibits in the Section is, without a doubt, the skeleton of the cave bear discovered at Baia de Fier, a large bear species that lived in Europe and Asia. At the same time, we cannot forget the skeletal reconstructions of the mammoth and the mastodon, discovered in Leu (Dolj), respectively Stoina (Gorj).

The Department of Natural Sciences also includes fossils belonging to Sarmatian aquatic mammals (about 15 million years old), like whales and dolphins.

From this magical world put together by the specialists of the Oltenia Museum, the plants and animals found in the entire area of Oltenia, from small mammals to millions of years old flora, could not be missing.

Those who want to get to know the region's ecosystems closely can do so here, in the exhibition of the same name. It includes caves, with the already well known formations, stalactites and stalagmites, rocks, minerals, mountain and alpine areas or hilly areas. As nothing that is beautiful in the country and in our region is preserved by itself, the section also includes notions of conservation of this beautiful biodiversity, which certainly needs awareness and action in order to survive.

Last but not least, the Department of Natural Sciences invites you to the planetarium, where you can learn and observe as many details as possible about our solar system and, in general, about everything that means stars, constellations, planets and asteroids. At your disposal are nine shows that include the dynamics of the celestial vault that changes depending on time, latitude and longitude, the map of the sky, but also a gallery of images of celestial bodies.

Stories are not always written or told, but we can observe them ourselves, with the naked eye, in the exact time that we give ourselves. Come visit the museum!
