About

About the Galicea Mare Winery

Dinescu's wine is produced in the south-west of Oltenia, at the Galicea Mare Winery, whose old buildings have not yet been renovated but have already been equipped with new technology. The grapes used come from two vineyards of 50 hectares, one located right under the wine cellar wing, the other on a Danube bend, in the Drincei hills.

Built in 1915 after a French project - initiated in the previous year by planting a 15 ha vineyard with predominantly native varieties, grafted in breeding grounds of the house of Ştirbei - the Galicea Mare Winery belonged to the Bibescu-Ştirbei boyars, supplying the noble Oltenian wines to the famous Bucharest cellars of the old family.

The technological upgrade began in 2004 with the acquisition of a Vaslin-Bucher pneumatic press and an alluvial filter, and in 2009 the wine cellar was equipped with the first stainless steel tanks and the entire cooling facility required for the controlled temperature control of the wines.

The old building of the winery, with a special charm, but bearing the insignia of the stories of our recent history, is to be rebuilt in the immediate future so that it can be reintroduced, as it deserves, in the touristic circuit of Oltenia's famous wines and vineyards.

Cetate and Galicea Mare Wineries

The grapes that supply the winery come from Cetate and Galicea Mare, from two young vineyards of 50ha each, planted between 2006-2008 in the context of a European project. Belonging to the Oltenia Hills and the Plaiurile Drâncei vineyards, the two plantations enjoy an ecological setting with an ideal oenopedoclimatic vocation ideal for obtaining high-class wines.

The plantations include both native varieties with an old tradition of prosperity in the region, such as Romanian Tamaioasa, White Feteasca and Black Feteasca, as well as noble European varieties such as Chardonnay, Italian Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Muscat ottonel, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet sauvignon. The Galicea Mare plantation also includes a plot of Shiraz, as well as approximately 3ha preserved from the old vineyard (planted in the 1950s), with Romanian Tămâioasa and Black Feteasca.
