About

Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea spreads over a blessed terroir with mild sun and harsh soil, like a precious mixture of basic nature and high-altitude human character.

Segarcea estate lies on the 44° parallel, known as „the quality parallel”, in the Southern region of Romania called Oltenia, 25 km away from Craiova city and 70 km away from the Danube. In Segarcea, vinegrowing is favoured by the terroir. The vines spread over the last hills that lead to the Danube. In the past, these hills were at the bottom of a sea which rose like a limestone pedestal covered nowadays by a chernozem bedding.

At least 1440 hours of sunshine annually, from the 1st of April to the 31th of October, favor especially the red varieties, without discouraging the whites. The annual rainfall raises up to 565 mm and the average annual temperatures reach 11 degrees Celsius. Ideal conditions to create strong character wines.

Segarcea — “the land of dream” as its Latin roots predict — is one of the twelve domains that the Royal House of Romania took under administration during Carol I, King of Romania, in 1884, by Parliament decision. This is how the Administration of the Royal Domains (ADC) was established.

The role of the royal domains was to support financially the Royal House, but also to become agricultural hubs in the avant-garde of technology and knowhow.

Among these domains, Segarcea was assigned the role of vineyard and winery, under the supervision of distinguished agronomists and winegrowers coordinated by Florian Davidescu and Dobre Radulescu.

Ever since, the wines from Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea have accompanied the country’s kings and statesmen to diplomatic receptions and witnessed history making, like a faithful servant.

Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea was born as a rootstock and vine nursery, where 60 varietals were produced, then became a vineyard of 300 ha. Between 1906 and 1908 the winery was built, based on the project of two Romanian architects, Iosif Exner si Jean Pompilian, under Stefan Făgădău supervision. It was one of the first buildings made of steel reinforced concrete in Romania. Designed in a greek cross shape and built for gravitational winemaking, the new cellar bore the royal symbols of the Crown: the royal family coat of arms and the royal lilies chaplet that embellished its entry.

The plantation was entirely reorganized starting with 2005, so as to respect the configuration from the royal time: 60% of the surface is destined to red varieties and 40% to white varieties.

Europe, Asia and America altogether recognized the wines from Segarcea starting with 2007. An impressive portfolio, counting hundreds of awards came as a coronation of all the passion and effort invested in creating fine wines.

Among the most notable awards there are:
• The Diamond Nova awards won during the past editions by several wines - Principesa Margareta (white blend), Minima Moralia Gratitude (Cabernet sauvignon 2008) and Tămâioasă roză Prestigeat the „Femmes et Vins du Monde, Monaco” challenge.
• Gold and silver medals at highly specialized challanges, such Mondial du Rose, Mondial des Cabernet, Mondial des Pinots, Mondial des Muscats.
• Diamond Nova and gold medals in the USA recognizing the original character of the Minima Moralia and Vardo packaging concepts.
•Numerous awards for the traditional Romanian variety Tămâioasa românească, a high-value local grape, which found in Segarcea its first high quality commercial interpretation as a dry wine, after decades during which it only produced semi-dry or semi-sweet wines.

For wine sales and tasting sessions at the wine cellar, we welcome you to Segarcea, in the midst of our domain.
