Colibri Theatre for Children and Youth is a public performing institution, subordinated to City Hall and Local Council Craiova Craiova.
It was established in 1949 as a department of Puppets Theater at Marin Sorescu National Theatre, becoming autonomous in 1956. Since 1998 the institution is redefined as Colibri Theatre for Children and Youth, keeping the specifics of puppetry and animation, and broadening the addressability of artistic expression. Currently, the theater has an auditorium with a capacity of 370 seats, a multifunctional room, spaces for creative workshops and exhibitions, production workshops and offices where works and creates daily 29 employees.
Colibri Theatre is an institution of repertoire, with 20 permanent performances, from Romanian and universal literature and also original dramaturgy for children, youth and adults, workshops, exhibitions, the largest international festival of animation art from Romania held in unconventional spaces, Puppets Occupy Street, and it is also host institution for various types of performances, concerts and many other cultural activities.
Projects and programs designed for the community by Colibri Theater (theater performances, street performances, festivals, exhibitions, workshops) aimed to promote the quality artistic act, the education of children and youth through animation art, to create a loyal audience and to raise the cultural level of the city. Such projects are Puppets Occupy Street Festival, The bus with puppets, Puppets therapy, The puppets marathon, The itinerant exhibition The book, the puppet, the story, Theatre Week, Open Doors, Workshops of the Factory of Stories electroColibri, Colibri in one ACT.
Colibri Theatre was present in the most important national festivals in this field, but also in international festivals in Europe, Asia and North Africa, gathering countless awards and honors.
The dynamics of the projects, the balance between tradition and innovation, the opening to the public of all ages, the visibility in the community and the respect for puppet theater and his stories describe the current state of Colibri Theatre and reinforces the long-term perspective.
