#150YearsOfGenius. The Year of Brâncuși debuts in Craiova with the Gilles Apap & Colors of Invention concert
2026 is the Year of Brâncuși in Romania, and in Craiova and Dolj, the Dolj County Council will organize a landmark event every month, to pay tribute to the immense personality of the Oltenian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, the one who made stone sing for humanity.
The first event in this series will take place this weekend, more precisely on January 17, at 6:00 PM, at the "Constantin Brâncuși" Center. French violinist Gilles Apap and his Colors of Inventions quartet will come to Craiova to create a symbolic bridge between Romania and France, the country that was the home of the Romanian artist for so long. Thus, from the musicians Gilles Apap (violin), Myriam Lafargue (accordion), Philippe Noharet (contrabass) and Ludovit Kovac (cymbalum) we will receive a well-deserved sample of the vibrant spirit of Brâncuși's workshop in Impasse Ronsin. The weight of this choice is all the greater as the "Constantin Brâncuși" Center houses the very beams that Brâncuși had in his workshop in Paris.
The chosen repertoire is a fascinating cultural dialogue, which brings together the genius of composers - among whom we mention Bach, Mozart, Enescu or Satie - with the freedom of jazz and the authenticity of traditional Oltenia music.
Who is Gilles Apap?
Gilles Apap is a French violinist who was, for ten years, concertmaster of the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra, California. His career now focuses on his soloist activity, playing with orchestras all over the world. He is known as a violin virtuoso in classical music, but also in traditional music from Europe, America and India.
Brâncuși Year, here, at home
The Brâncuși Year in Craiova and in Dolj will mean a monthly cultural event, organized in partnership with the cultural institutions subordinate to the Dolj County Council. For Brâncuși, Craiova represented the place where he spent several years of study, at the School of Arts and Crafts, and the Craiova Art Museum hosts eight of his works - "Sărutul", "Tors (Coapsă)", "Cap de copil", "Orgoliu", "Domnișoara Pogany", "Vitelius", "Ecorșeu" and "Scaun colțar". The "Constantin Brâncuși" collection can be visited, along with the other collections and exhibitions of the Craiova Art Museum, according to the following schedule: Tuesday-Sunday: 10:00-17:00 (last entry at 16:30).
We remind you that the year 2026 was declared, by law, as the "Year of Constantin Brâncuși", to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the sculptor from Oltenia, who changed the world of art through his unique and original vision.
