History and tradition in Dolj

About

In 2016, Dolj County Council decided to continue the projects designed to develop and exploit the county’s tourist potential by establishing the first tourist route in Dolj County.

Entitled “History and tradition in Dolj”, the route encompasses five objectives of major cultural and tourist importance for the county: the Village Museum in Pielești, the Bania House, the Department of History and Archaeology of the Oltenia Museum, as well as the two kulas from Brabova and Cernătești villages.

The patrimony of Dolj County includes a series of monuments that are part of the national and local cultural heritage and can be exploited in terms of tourism and cultural potential. Thus, in order to capitalize on the county’s cultural heritage and in order to learn about the environment and the cultural space in which we live, in order to improve the county’s economic development, as well as to contribute to the creation of economic, social and cultural added value, it was proposed the creation of the “Doljian History and Tradition” tourist route.

In Dolj County there are two valuable monuments from the historical, social, architectural, regional, national, and eastern European point of view, namely the Izvoranu-Geblescu kula located in Brabova, a class A historical monument (code DJ-II-m-A-08200), and the Cernăteștilor kula, located in Cernătești, a class A historical monument (code DJ-II-m-A-08237). These are some of the numerous examples in which the national specificity intertwines with the influences characteristic of constructions from the neighboring peoples (Bulgarians, Serbs). The two kulas are to be rehabilitated by the County Council by accessing European funds. The buildings are in a state of advanced degradation, and the interventions to which they have been subjected, without correlating the buildings’ functional requirements with the principles and rules underlying the consolidation and restauration works, that are mandatory for historical monuments, have also contributed to the enhancement of this state.

Besides the two kulas, the tourist route also encompasses the Department of History and Archaeology, the Pielești Village Museum and the Bania House, a monument with medieval architecture and the oldest civil construction in Craiova. Built at the end of the 15th century by the Craiovești boyars and rebuilt by the martyr-ruler Constantin Brâncoveanu in 1699, the Bania House, which currently houses the Oltenia Museum’s Ethnography Department, is the most visited monument in Craiova by foreign tourists and will represent the centerpoint of the tourist route.
