The Romanian blouse, the star of June. The collection of the Oltenia Museum, a must see at the Ethnography Section

Every year, since 2013, on June 24, something magical takes over Craiova and the whole Dolj. And over the whole world. It’s the Universal Day of The Romanian Blouse (called "ie" in Romanian).

But even before, and on other occasions, women from all over the county took out of the closets, well kept and neat, the blouses left by the ancestors for their children, to remain worn as a testament of tradition and identity. For we must never forget who we are.

Until this year, the streets of Craiova were filled, with the occasion of Sânzienele or Drăgaica celebrations, with people proud to wear and celebrate this piece of clothing. And they walked on an on on the streets so that the world could see them and not forget.

Unfortunately, this year, this holiday, generically called "Craiova is dressed in ie", does not take place much because of the social distancing rules we all know. This cannot prevent us, for example, from visiting the Oltenia Museum, right at Casa Băniei (Ethnography Section), to see the most beautiful exhibits of traditional clothing. With over 3,000 pieces, the Traditional Costume Collection is a true story of the region of Oltenia, which does not lack, of course, Her Majesty, The Romanian Blouse.

We cannot describe this blouse better than through the words of the specialists from the Oltenia Museum, who put into words the unique fabric of these pieces:

"There are such miracles because there were people in whom all the fibers of existence were intertwined, whose souls twisted slowly, with love and pain, in dreams and forgetfulness, who strung pieces of them on the robe for infinity and eternity. People made up of twists of the being and wrinkles of the consciousness that things did not simply pass, but extended far beyond the natural, as far as the essence of their being".

You can therefore visit the museum, from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:00 and 17:00. On Discover Dolj you will also find a small history of this unique piece from the Romanian history, which has so deeply permeated the souls of those who love the tradition and culture of our people.

Even though we can't walk together with the others and we can't enjoy together this Romanian soul "uniform", that doesn't stop us from opening the closet doors and bringing to light the clothes that represent us. At work, on the street, at meetings with loved ones, put on, at least on June 24, the Romanian blouse, as a proof of not forgetting and as proof of love for beauty.

And, to let the others know, take photos wherever "home" means to you and join the unique campaign launched by La Blouse Roumaine. Post after June 24 the pictures taken, with the hashtags # AcasălaOrigini and # ZiuaIei2020, for you, for your loved ones, for the future, for an album that really shows the beauty of Romanian clothes.

So, proudly wear the Oltenian blouse and go to see it at the museum any day you want. We dearly advise you to start on June 24!
