#VisitTheMuseum (5) - The Museum of Art and Ethnography in Calafat, a jewel of the county
The Museum of Art and Ethnography in Calafat, or the Marincu Palace, as the beautiful building that houses the cultural institution is known, is one of the most precious constructions of Dolj's architecture. With the project signed by the same Paul Gottereau, who also created the architectural project of the Art Museum (Jean Mihail Palace) in Craiova, the Marincu Palace stands out for its specific brilliance at the beginning of the 20th century.
Operating as a museum since 1967, the building belonged to the wealthy Ștefan Marincu, former mayor of Calafat, who erected the building in memory of his eldest daughter, Mărioara. Dozens of rooms arranged on three levels bring the Marincu Palace to an area of over 8,000 square meters, which contributes even more to the grandiose image that it has.
A good opportunity to visit the Marincu Palace, beyond seeing the skill of architecture and construction, are also the collections of the Museum of Art and Ethnography. According to our friends from monumenteoltenia.ro, the institution houses “a rich collection of art objects exhibited in permanent exhibitions, but also organizes many personal exhibitions of contemporary artists from the country and abroad (Italy, Bulgaria, Serbia, Japan, etc.). The Art Museum of Calafat also houses a hall dedicated to artists in Vidin (Bulgaria), the city opposite, called the Bulgarian Cultural Centre. A Romanian Cultural Centre also exists in Vidin, where Romanian artists organize exhibitions and events. In the museum there is also a hall of friendship between Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia, partner countries within the Cross-border Association Euroregion Danube XXI ”.
The museum, a monument of local interest, also benefits from an excellent virtual tour, which can be accessed at the address below.
If you arrive in Calafat, therefore, do not miss a visit to the Marincu Palace, which guarantees a unique journey in the current architectural and artistic landscape. Be up to date with the Museum's activity on the official Facebook page, where you can see, among other things, a selection of works chosen by the institution's specialists.
