„Romanescu” Park, 121 years of beauty in the soul of Craiova!
The most beautiful park in Craiova and one of the most beautiful parks in the whole country, the "Nicolae Romanescu" Park celebrates, this Sunday 121 years since its inauguration. Thus, a recollection of the story of this park, with all that it means for the people of Craiova and for the entire area of Oltenia, is welcome. We also urge you to celebrate it with a walk, because that's the only way you can truly discover its beauty!
On September 29, 1903, the park that now bears the name of the mayor who thought and put it into practice, Nicolae Romanescu, was inaugurated with great pomp, in the presence of King Carol The First, after three years of uninterrupted work. The story began in 1898, after the appointment of Nicolae Romanescu as mayor, when a city modernization project was voted on, one of the objectives of the program being to establish parks and gardens. In order to implement his idea of beautifying the city, Nicolae Romanescu also needed this area.
Built in a romantic style by the architect Edouard Redont (who also designed the National Exhibition in Carol Park - Bucharest), according to a project that was awarded the Gold Medal at the Paris International Exhibition in 1900, the "Nicolae Romanescu" Park hasn’t lost its luster even now and retains, after more than a hundred years, its charm and vintage flavour.
Reconstruction of the area for a spectacular park
Redont showed genius when drawing up the project, coming up with very bold ideas: hundreds of tree species were acclimatized, trees that normally do not grow in Romania's climatic conditions, he redesigned the lake, designed the suspension bridge, designed the castle, he improvised hills and valleys, roads, alleys and paths totaling over 35 km in length, everything being worked in the smallest detail.
The wide alleys, intended for walks, are complemented by the imposing shrubs, which have existed in its bosom since its inauguration. The Bibescu House, the Enchanted Castle, the Suspended Bridge, the Hippodrome, the Summer Theater, the Velodrome, the technical fanfare pavilion with impressive acoustics are just some of the elements that complete the unique landscape of the park, which has no less than 97 hectares.
We invite you to discover the magic of this park that still shines, which will remain a bridge over time and a joy for Craiova residents and tourists alike! #CraiovaWonderland
