The first indoor velodrome in Romania will be built in Craiova! See here how it will look like

The Dolj County Council started an extremely ambitious project, which will reaffirm the importance of the presence of the city of Craiova and Dolj County on the national sports map. The county authority wants to build an impressive multifunctional sports complex, on the site of the historic "Tineretului" Stadium, which will become both the largest covered sports hall in the country and the first indoor velodrome in Romania.

The project is unique in Europe and is equally aimed at individual sports as well as team sports. Those who will train here will have modern training conditions, as the athletics track here will be the only one in the country that meets European level requirements.

"The technical project of this multifunctional base is at an advanced stage of elaboration, and we will receive it in the first part of June and be able to start the acquisition for awarding the works contract. Two years ago, we organized a public debate, which was attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports, the president of the Romanian Olympic Committee and the President of the Athletics Federation, five Olympic and four other world champions, as well as presidents of sports clubs, and the opinion the unanimous opinion was that it is necessary to build a multi-purpose hall, which would allow the practice of both individual and team sports. As such, we contracted a team of consultants in the field, who managed to obtain all the approvals from the relevant federations. We also have the approval of the International Athletics Federation and the International Cycling Federation, because, through what we will build, we want to comply with all the standards in the field, in order to host European and even world-level competitions", said the president of the Dolj County Council, Cosmin Vasile.

The construction itself is a building with a modern design, with ground floor, basement and three floors, on a total area of about 35,000 square meters. The complex will include:
  • A category I velodrome, designed for a speed of 80-85 km/h;
  • An oval running track, 200 meters long, with 6 lanes;
  • A straight track, 60 meters long, with 8 lanes;
  • Areas for events such as high jump, triple jump, pole vault or weight throw;
  • Changing rooms for athletes and referees;
  • Conference room;
  • Restaurant;
  • Gym;
  • Tribune with a total capacity of over 6,000 seats;
  • Playground;
  • A sports museum;
  • Administrative spaces.
 Thus, the new multifunctional sports complex comes to complete the sports ensemble in the area where it will be found, joining the Polyvalent Hall (rebuilt and inaugurated in 2012) and the "Ion Oblemenco" Stadium (inaugurated in 2017 and built on the site of the former "Central" Stadium).
