About

The ROSCI0045 site includes the Zăval Forest natural reserve of botanical interest, a reserve established following the Government Decision no. 2151/2004 regarding the establishment of the protected natural area regime for new areas. The coordinates of the centroid of the Zăval Forest nature reserve are: 230 51'44 "East and 430 49'39" North.

Zăval Forest is a mixed meadow forest, with species of oak, ash and elm (Habitat 91F0). This type of habitat includes hardwood species located in the major riverbed, regularly exposed to flooding during rising water levels, or in low areas, exposed to flooding caused by rising groundwater. These forests develop on recent alluvial deposits. Depending on the water regime, the dominant wood species belong to the genera Fraxinus, Ulmus or Quercus with a well-developed undergrowth. (Gafta et al., 2008 p.71). This type of habitat develops on well-drained soils, remains wet between floods, and the dominance of certain species that characterize this type of habitat depends on the water levels (Fraxinus, Ulmus, Quercus). These forests form mosaics of pioneer forests in the lower areas of the rivers. Riparian forests in Mediterranean areas are dominated by species of Salix (Salix alba, S. fragilis) and various species of poplar. It is a habitat that often appears in conjunction with the Alno-Padion type. Both have a fragmented distribution. The riparian forests along the great rivers of Europe correspond to the Ulmenion minoris alliance which, from a floristic and faunistic point of view, is a very diverse ecosystem.

Much of the Zăval Forest, north of 55A National Road, is occupied by poplar plantations, which most likely replaced the habitat-specific species. In the southern part, however, there is an area of riparian forest in very good state of conservation. The forest is crossed by several water canals that have a temporary status. The ash trees and oak trees in the Zăval Forest have an estimated age of over 80 years. Towards the central area of the forest you can see a colony of grey herons.

The natural area is located in the central-eastern part of Dolj County, in the northern village of Preajba, in the immediate vicinity of the national road DN55, linking the county seat of the county with the Bechet port. It was declared a protected area in 2000 and covers an area of 28 hectares. The natural area is a lacustrine complex: lakes, marshes, water courses, alluvial forests, sand dunes, arable lands, meadows and a wide variety of flora and fauna specific to wetlands. The complex consists of five ponds, arranged in steps, with a total area of 28 hectares, permanently supplied by strong springs. The ecological particularity of the area lies in the fact that in a relatively limited geographical area, a diversity of continental aquatic ecosystems is sprouted: springs, streams, rivers, lakes and marshes. Each of these features characteristic of biocenoses and plant and animal populations. The flora and fauna of the reserve are specific to wetlands with fresh water, and their variety and abundance is favoured by the abundance of water. Some of the species that can be seen in the Preajba-Făcăi area: Bird Species: white egret, white stork, small egret, lichen, chestnut duck, big goose, daydream. Mammals: hermelin, water rat, weasel, badger, hamster. Reptiles: water snake, steppe lizard, guler, turtle, water turtle, gypsy Flora: rush, pink larch, long leaf rush, yellow lily of the valley. The special protection area Maglavit is located in Dolj county, within the towns of Cetate, Maglavit and Calafat. The area is 3562.6 ha. The hydrographic network is represented by a Danube river sector, the lakes: Basarabi, Golenti, Maglavit, Hunia, Moreni and Fântâna Banului, along with several temporary lakes and marshy areas. These lakes are natural, developed in the low slopes of the meadow, having a large surface and a small depth, being used for irrigation and pisciculture. Their connection with the Danube is still preserved, the water supply being made directly from the river. The Special Protection Area Maglavit partially overlaps with the protected nature area of the Danube at Garla Mare-Maglavit, including the nature reserve Pajiştea Cetate. It was declared as an Avifaunistic Special Protection Area by the Government Decision no. 1284/2007 for the conservation of 36 bird species. The location of the Special Protection Area Maglavit on a very important migration route linking the Pannonian Plain and the Balkan Peninsula - Bulgaria - Bosphorus, explains the great number of species that can be seen in this area during the spring and autumn passages. The most significant ones are the bully, the small cormorant, the small egret and the night bird. Extensive in terms of species diversity is the passage of ducks and shore birds, from which many species can be observed. Famous for the Wild Peony Nature Reserve, Poiana Bujorului in the Pleniţa Forest, is located 59 km from Craiova, on the border with Mehedinţi County, in a plain area with altitudes of up to 200 meters, with a temperate climate and with average values. The Reserve of the wild peony, unique in Romania's landscape, is set on an area of about 50 ha, and during the flowering period is a real fever. The forest shelters a variety of wild peony, called Paeonia Peregrina. Pliny has in ancient times made a detailed description of the peony, which he said could treat about 20 diseases. Every year, in May, the traditional peony celebration is held at Pleniţa. A large red peony is welcoming the locals but also the guests from Gorj, Olt and Mehedinti.
